How do you know if Bakelite is Bakelite?

The simplest way to test for Bakelite is to:

  1. Lick your thumb.
  2. Rub the surface of what you are testing hard for 10-20 seconds.
  3. Put your nose up to the spot rubbed by your thumb.

If it is Bakelite you will smell what can only be described as burnt rubber and if it doesn't, well it's plastic or post-Bakelite!

Gadgets

Every single one of the Cat Eye Girls loves old kitchenware, including gadgets with wooden handles painted 1950s red and 1930s green.

Our love of kitchenware extends into the industrial side, with gear driven apple peelers and cherry pitters.

None of us can resist a kitchen gadget with a Bakelite handle that spreads, slices or chops.  And, if it is Bakelite and red . . . it becomes mighty hard to part with!
